Reviews of live theatre being impossible during these days of the pandemic, THEATRE'S LEITER SIDE
is pleased to provide instead accounts of previous theatre
seasons--encompassing the years 1970-1975-for theatre-hungry readers. If you'd
like to know the background on how this previously unpublished series came to
be and what its relationship is to my three The Encyclopedia of the New
York Stage volumes (covering every New York play, musical, revue, and
revival between 1920 and 1950), please check the prefaces to any of the entries
beginning with the letter “A.” See the list at the end of the current entry.

COOLER NEAR THE LAKE [Comedy and Music Revue/Improvisational]

A cabaret revue created
by a group from Chicago’s famed improv club, Second City. It was, however,
unable to capture the excitement stirred up in past years by a series of Second
City revues visiting New York. The topical sketches and songs struck Mel Gussow
as “a pleasant diversion.” “The skits seem random. Many of the jokes are
facile,” and too much depended on TV takeoffs.
Part of the
program was given over to fresh improvs, but most of the material was set from
previous sessions. The ultimately best-known cast member was Brian Doyle-Murray (older brother of Bill Murray) of SNL.
