CHARLIE WAS HERE AND NOW HE’S GONE
"In Lieu of Reviews"
Reviews of live theatre being impossible during these
days of the pandemic, THEATRE'S LEITER SIDE is pleased to provide instead
accounts of previous theatre seasons--encompassing the years 1970-1975-for
theatre-hungry readers. If you'd like to know the background on how this
previously unpublished series came to be and what its relationship is to my
three The
Encyclopedia of the New York Stage volumes (covering every New York
play, musical, revue, and revival between 1920 and 1950), please check the
prefaces to any of the entries beginning with the letter “A.” See the list at
the end of the current entry.

Robert Guillaume
and Rosalind Cash were standouts in this play about a young, black, ghetto
junkie, Charlie (Joe Morton, replacing Donny Burks, who played it in previews), a man of intelligence and sensitivity, who gets
involved in a kidnapping wherein he must act as guard for an abducted rich boy
and kill him if the ransom is not paid.
The well-acted,
well-directed play was overly sentimentalized and melodramatic, being more a
vehicle for performers, said Clive Barnes, than a work of literary merit. Julius
Novick thought it overlong and lacking in surprise. Robert LuPone, later an important New York theatre figure, played the small role of a sailor.
