291. KISS NOW. From my (unpublished) ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE NEW YORK STAGE, 1970-1975

Susan McAnemy, Lyle Pearsons, Nancy Demings, Lloyd Bremseth.

KISS NOW [Musical Revue] B/LY: Maxine Klein; M: William S. Fischer; D: Maxine Klein; CH: Sandra Caprin; S/C: Richard Devin; C: Nancy Adzima; P: John Ramsey, William Formaad, Milan Stitt; T: Martinique Theatre (OB); 4/20/71-4/23/71 (4)

Kiss Now was lucky to get in four smooches before vanishing for good, with its audience participation gimmick of “kissing,” each touch of a spectator by an actor being considered a symbolic peck. There thus were elbow kisses and knee kisses and so on. Sort of a pre-pandemic buss-fest. The critics’ reaction could be summed up by a variation of the old lyrics, “Kiss me once and kiss me twice but don’t dare kiss me once again.”

Mel Gussow was disenchanted by the “fake” intentions and execution, which he thought dull, repetitious, and juvenile. “The show is as predictable as the alphabet.”
