"In Lieu of Reviews"
Reviews of live theatre being impossible during these days of the pandemic, THEATRE'S LEITER SIDE
is pleased to provide instead accounts of previous theatre
seasons--encompassing the years 1970-1975-for theatre-hungry readers. If you'd
like to know the background on how this previously unpublished series came to
be and what its relationship is to my three The Encyclopedia of the New
York Stage volumes (covering every New York play, musical, revue, and
revival between 1920 and 1950), please check the prefaces to any of the entries
beginning with the letter “A.” See the list at the end of the current entry.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
OF JUST ABOUT EVERYONE [Musical/Youth] B/M/LY: Earl Wilson, Jr.; ADD. DLG: Michael
Sawyer; S/L: Andrew Greenhut; C: Miles White; P: Robert Shelley; T: Bijou
Theatre (OB); 3/9/71-3/14/71 (8)
The star, director, and author of this flop was the
son of the New York Post’s popular gossip columnist, Earl Wilson, but that did
nothing to keep the show open for more than a week. Essentially an “everyman”
allegory set in the modern world, A Day
in the Life of Just about Everyone examined the experiences of a
conventional, middle-class young man, Smitty, played by the show’s creator
himself.
The situations were considered goo removed from and
out of touch with actuality. Musically, the show was acceptable but not
exceptional, and the work as a whole came off as a trivial exercise that, as
Clive Barnes put it, was “too elusive and . . . vacuous.” “At least,” he said, “it
proved brief.”
