108. CRAZY NOW. From my (unpublished) ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE NEW YORK STAGE, 1970-1975

CRAZY NOW

"In Lieu of Reviews"

Reviews of live theatre being impossible during these days of the pandemic, THEATRE'S LEITER SIDE is pleased to provide instead accounts of previous theatre seasons--encompassing the years 1970-1975-for theatre-hungry readers. If you'd like to know the background on how this previously unpublished series came to be and what its relationship is to my three The Encyclopedia of the New York Stage volumes (covering every New York play, musical, revue, and revival between 1920 and 1950), please check the prefaces to any of the entries beginning with the letter “A.” See the list at the end of the current entry.

CRAZY NOW [Musical Revue/Topical] B/LY: Richard Smithies and Maura Cavanagh; M: Norman Sachs; D/CH: Voight Kempson; C: Margaret Tobin; L: Wilson King; P: B.F. Productions, Inc.; T: Eden Theatre (OB); 9/10/72 (1)

The opening night of this one-night flop was delayed by a bomb scare. No explosives were found and the bomb around was the one on stage in the guise of a musical revue. Assorted sketches and songs (which Clive Barnes called “witless, tasteless and lacking in imagination”) about modern life were performed in the large Eden Theatre, when a more intimate environment was needed. The result, Barnes said, seemed “interminable.” “All of [the cast] seemed agreeable, he noted, “but not sensationally talented.” John Simon, however, thought the effort “amiable and endurable,” but still not worth the candle.

One of the five-member ensemble, William Buell, remained a persistent presence on the New York stage for over another half century.
